Mudejar Interpretation Center Palace of the Marquises of Algaba

The Palace of the Marquises of Algaba - Mudéjar Center offers the opportunity to discover one of the grand noble palaces of Seville, located in the heart of Calle Feria. Renovated between 1998 and 2002, the building, a magnificent Renaissance palace of great architectural value (15th century), features an impressive Mudéjar Gothic facade.

The Mudéjar Center in the Palace of the Marquises of Algaba represents the first major museographic commitment by the City Council of Seville by presenting a pioneering initiative in Spain, as the existing center in Teruel is exclusively focused on research and studies. The museological project centered on the Mudéjar as a constant and as a style discovered through the visit teaches this phenomenon of typically Hispanic hybridization in a very didactic manner, where builders, potters, and masters coexist, working in the Moorish manner, in the modern style, that is, in Gothic, and in the ancient way using the first Renaissance language in a cutting-edge manner for the time.

A total of 111 pieces are on display, of which 20 come from the municipal archaeological collection deposited since 1940 in the warehouses of the Archaeological Museum of Seville, among which standout Mudéjar jars, seals, and household utensils of special value from the same period can be found. The Museum of Arts and Popular Customs has lent 19 tiles that are a perfect example of the techniques of edge, dry cord, and table tiles.

The Museum of Fine Arts of Seville deposited in the Museum of Arts and Popular Customs has lent a watercolor by Joaquin Guichot from 1872 that represents the facade of the palace of the marquises of Algaba, which has also been restored by the City Council for this occasion along with the tiles of the palace lent by the Urban Planning Management.

The collection is completed with 20 pieces from the municipal collection that were located in the Tower of Don Fadrique of Santa Clara.
