Origins and Iberian Period
The first evidence of human settlements in Montoro dates back to the Bronze Age when the area was inhabited by Iberian peoples. Archaeological remains indicate the existence of an important commercial and agricultural center. Montoro was a key hub in the region of Turdetania, a significant Iberian territory in the south of the Iberian Peninsula.
Roman Rule
With the arrival of the Romans in the 3rd century BC, Montoro, then known as Epora, experienced significant growth. It became a prosperous city thanks to its production of olive oil and cereals, highly valued commodities in the Roman Empire. Roads, villas, and bridges were constructed, some of whose remnants can still be seen today.
Muslim Influence and Christian Reconquest
After the fall of the Roman Empire, Montoro became part of the Visigothic kingdom and later the Caliphate of Córdoba during Muslim rule. Under Islamic dominion, the city flourished with an advanced agricultural system and architecture influenced by Arab art. In 1240, King Ferdinand III of Castile reconquered Montoro, integrating it into the Kingdom of Castile. From then on, the city experienced renewed economic and social growth.
Centuries of Expansion and Modernization
During the 16th and 17th centuries, Montoro experienced a period of great economic development based on agriculture and the exploitation of its natural resources. The city became an important center for olive oil production, gaining fame throughout Spain. In the 19th century, industrialization brought infrastructure modernization and urban expansion.
Montoro Today
Today, Montoro preserves its historical essence and is a destination of great tourist interest. Its historic center, declared a Historic-Artistic Site, features cobbled streets, Renaissance churches, and traditional Andalusian architecture. Additionally, the city continues to be renowned for its production of extra virgin olive oil, a fundamental pillar of its identity.
