The interior of the church houses an impressive Renaissance altarpiece located on the main altar, a masterpiece that captures the attention of all visitors with its detailed and exquisite workmanship. In addition to its religious function, the church also houses the Vélez-Málaga Holy Week Museum, where various items and artifacts are displayed that narrate the rich history of this significant celebration.

Built in 1487, the Church of Santa María la Mayor stood as the main temple in the historic center of Vélez-Málaga. The buildings architecture presents a fascinating combination of Mudejar and Gothic styles, characteristic of the period of its construction. Its basilica plan, composed of three naves separated by robust pillars with pointed arches, culminates in an apse that takes the form of a cubic chapel. The ceiling, adorned with elaborate wooden coffering, is a true jewel of historic carpentry that adds an additional artistic dimension to the church.

The church cloister, with its elegant semicircular arches, offers a space for serenity and contemplation. The square bell tower, built with exposed brick, is another notable feature of the church. It is believed that this tower may have been the former minaret of the original mosque upon which the church was built, thus preserving a tangible fragment of its Islamic past.

The Church of Santa María la Mayor is not only a place of worship but also a living testament to the history and culture of Vélez-Málaga. Its walls and rooms tell stories of faith, art, and transformation over the centuries. Visitors who pass through its doors not only experience the architectural magnificence of the temple but are also immersed in a historical journey that connects the past with the present.
