The chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows

Artistic Elements

The chapels in the transept date from 1723. The Gospel chapel, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, is the most sumptuous, with plant decoration and Mariological symbols. In the Epistle nave, the chapel of Jesus of Nazareth has a lobed floor plan and retains its original flooring. The chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows, built in the late 18th century, has a circular floor plan with Corinthian pilasters and garland decoration. This chapel also has a centralized floor plan with rich plasterwork ornamentation and striking tilework on the floor.

Clothes and Altarpieces

The choir stalls are located above the first bay of the central nave, accessible from the storeroom in the Epistle nave. The Gospel nave houses the Baptismal Chapel, which is closed off with a grille. In the subchoir stalls of the central nave, there is a white marble font from the 18th century.

The interior of the church has three naves separated by quadrangular pillars supporting semicircular arches. At the corners of the transept, there are Tuscan-style pillars with capitals that form a continuous frieze. The central nave is covered with a barrel vault with lunettes and transverse arches, while the transept has a hemispherical vault with eight ribs on pendentives. The sacristy is rectangular, with a barrel vault with lunettes and transverse arches.

Interior

The tower, located at the chevet, is made of brick and consists of five sections. The central section is decorated with chamfered bricks, and the next section with coffered pilasters. The bell openings (one from 1861 and the other from 1915) have semicircular arches. The entire structure is covered by a very pointed spire.

The Tower

The main façade reflects the interior layout. The taller central nave is evident in the molded pediment with a circular skylight. The pediment features a wrought iron cross with arms ending in fleur-de-lis. Between the pediment and the portal, there is a semicircular window that illuminates the choir stalls. The lower side aisles have rectangular windows that illuminate the baptistery and the storeroom.

The construction materials include stuccoed masonry panels leveled with fired brick, which is also present at the corners of the building. The roofs are covered with curved tiles. The doorway, the only stone element, features a semicircular arch on raised imposts, closed by a walnut gate and a screen.

At both ends of the transept nave, there are two alcoves, barely visible from the outside as they appear to be extensions of the nave. In the Epistle nave, there are two alcoves; the one closest to the transept forms a protruding cube. The adjacent alcove is octagonal and clearly separates itself from the structure of the building.

It has a Latin cross floor plan with three naves and a transept covered with a dome. The central nave is higher than the side naves, as is the transept, above which the dome emerges. The bell tower, covered by a hipped roof, is attached to the chevet. The dome of the transept is topped with a weather vane in the shape of a Greek cross with trident-shaped ends. Next to the dome is the sacristy, which has a height similar to the rest of the church.

The church in Casabermeja stands in a free-standing position, overcoming a significant topographical slope, which accentuates the urban presence of its voluminous structures and tall bell tower.

Description

Authorization for repopulation of the area at the beginning of the 16th century led to the construction, in the first half of that century, of a church dedicated to Our Lady of Socorro, around which the village was grouped. In the 18th century, population growth made it necessary to expand the building, giving it the current configuration and the Baroque imprint that it retains.

The chapel in the Gospel nave contains an altarpiece from the 18th century, made of gilded and polychrome wood, with a bronze tabernacle from the workshop of Félix Granda. Inside the chapel, there are emblematic and iconographic elements related to the Eucharist and the Virgin Mary. The other chapels retain a pictorial and sculptural decoration that stands out for its richness and Baroque style
