Rutas y Senderos de Bubión

Sendero Pueblos del Poqueira

Length of the Trail: 8.9 km

Duration: 3 hours 50 minutes

Difficulty Level: Medium

Type: Semicircular

We find ourselves on the Bubión section of the Pueblos del Poqueira trail. Along the route, hikers will encounter various elements of rural historical heritage, which we briefly outline below.

On one hand, we will find elements associated with water, such as acequias (from the Arabic assáqya), channels dug into the ground that carry melting snow from Sierra Nevada to the fields, creating forests, meadows, and springs through this transportation and the natural infiltration of water into the soil. Albercas (from Arabic albírka) and ponds for storing irrigation water are also present.

On the other hand, when referring to stone, we will encounter the characteristic balates (from Arabic balát), traditional walls of the region that help stabilize the slopes of the mountains and create artificial plains for cultivation. These walls are built using dry stone techniques, without any mortar (or modern cement), creating micro-ecosystem conditions that shelter various flora and fauna (reptiles, rodents, insects, etc.).

The characteristic cobbled paths, made of stone, can also be found in the oldest routes, designed to prevent erosion by stabilizing the terrain.

Ruta Pampaneira - Bubión - Capileira

Regions: Alpujarra and Valle de Lecrín

Municipalities: Pampaneira, Bubión, Capileira

Length of the Route: 9.8 km

Estimated Duration: 3 hours 45 minutes

Starting Altitude: 1,010 m

Maximum Altitude Reached: 1,430 m

Maximum Positive Elevation Gain: 630 m

Ecosystems: Mid and high mountain

Recommended Season: Any time of the year

The journey begins at the Information Point of the Sierra Nevada Natural Space, located in the Plaza de la Libertad in Pampaneira. Shortly after departing from Pampaneira, a curious perspective of the village comes into view, with tiered houses featuring gray roofs, known locally as ‘terraos,’ which are made from a clay material called ‘launa.’ The path gently ascends through terraced fields, interspersed with fruit trees and other characteristic species like chestnuts and mulberries, remnants of a bygone era when Alpujarra thrived on its flourishing silk industry.

This cultural landscape extends along both slopes of the gorge, on either side of the Poqueira River, and is a legacy of the Moorish inhabitants who settled the Sierra Nevada foothills. From the start of the route, the impact of human activity on the slopes is evident. The natural vegetation has been replaced by terraced crops, which rise on both sides of the gorge, climbing to nearly 2,000 meters. To make this mountain agriculture productive, a complex network of acequias was designed, which is still preserved today. This network of acequias holds great cultural value, not only for agriculture but also for its significant impact on the landscape and ecosystems.
