The Roman Villa Interpretation Center in Estepona

The findings obtained from the excavations carried out reveal that the remains belong to a Roman villa of a stately nature, strategically close to the sea, with architectural similarities with other Roman villas found in Spanish territory.

This Roman villa represents a distinctive example of the domestic architecture typical of the Mediterranean coasts of the Baetic province during the Roman era. Archaeological studies carried out, including surveys carried out in 1990, indicate that the area was later used as a necropolis, which suggests an evolution in the use and occupation of the place over time.

The remains that can currently be visited correspond to a sector of the Roman Villa that experienced two different phases of development. The first phase, dating from the early imperial period, reveals an urban sector organized around an atrium with an impluvium, typical characteristics of prestigious Roman residential architecture. In contrast, the second phase shows a transformation of the villa, where the pre-existing walls and structures were reused for the construction of more modest rooms intended for industrial uses. These areas would have been dedicated to functions such as warehouses, workshops and activities related to the exploitation of fishing resources, thus reflecting the adaptability and diversification of activities in the context of Roman life in the coastal region.
