Real Casa de la Moneda

The Royal Mint of Seville, one of the seven principal mints of Castile authorized by the Catholic Monarchs, was established in 1532 by Philip II. It was where gold and silver from the Americas were smelted and minted into coins, such as ducats and crowns, which were crucial for supporting the European economy during the 16th century—a period marked by New World exploration.

Between 1500 and 1717, Seville received substantial quantities of these metals, holding exclusive rights to merchandise from the New World. The mint employed over 200 workers to operate the furnaces and manage the foundry.

In 1868, the Seville Mint ceased its industrial functions. It was divided into lots, sold to private individuals, and converted into residential spaces. By the late 20th century, the building was restored to reflect its former splendor.

Visiting the Royal Mint on Calle Habana offers a glimpse into the Golden Age. It also served as a filming location for the movie *Alatriste*, starring Viggo Mortensen.
