Over the centuries, the castle played a crucial role in defending the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada until its surrender to the Christian troops of Ferdinand the Catholic on June 11, 1485. Although some sources suggest a Roman origin for the castle, its importance during the Islamic era and the Reconquista is undeniable.

At the end of the 18th century, a local scholar named the castle "Castillo de la Madera," based on the supposed existence of a log deposit.
