Iglesia del Sagrario

This church occupies the site of the former Grand Mosque of Granada, which housed the Granada Cathedral in 1526. Here, Charles V and Isabel of Portugal were received by the canons and cathedral dignitaries. After the Thanksgiving ceremony, the imperial couple continued on to the Alhambra.

History

It was built in 1704 on the prayer hall of the Grand Mosque of Granada, which housed the Granada Cathedral in 1526. Here, Charles V and Isabel of Portugal were received by the canons and cathedral dignitaries. After the Thanksgiving ceremony, they continued on to the Alhambra.

The initial design was by Diego de Siloé, but construction began in 1705 when Archbishop Martín de Azcalgorta commissioned Francisco Hurtado Izquierdo for the work. The construction was halted due to a lack of financial resources. In 1717, José de Bada y Navaja took over the direction of the works. The vaults and the transept were completed in 1745, and the temple was opened for worship in 1759.

Description

It has a Greek cross plan. Its interior stands out for its spacious design, which surprises with a sequence of successive vaults and spherical domes, richly decorated with reliefs.

Above, on the entablature of the perimeter walls, one can see the delicate balustraded gallery that runs around the entire church, housing interesting paintings from the 15th and 16th centuries and a sensational Renaissance baptismal font.
