Church of the True Cross

The name Vera Cruz literally means "true cross" and is due to the fact that the church stood next to a boundary cross (humilladero) that was believed to contain a splinter of the true cross of Christ. The churchs dedication also includes Our Lady of Sorrows, a statue highly venerated by local residents since time immemorial. Originally located outside the town, the population growth of the 18th and 19th centuries eventually integrated it into the urban center.

Destroyed in a fire during the Civil War, the church was rebuilt for the first time after the war, but collapsed in 1957. It was rebuilt again in 1960 by popular support in a neo-Baroque style, under the direction of architect Carlos Sainz de Santa María. It currently has a Latin cross layout and an adjacent two-story bell tower made of exposed brick on the exterior. The church is used as an auxiliary parish church, and its adjoining halls are used for catechism classes and as a meeting point for some of the local associations. It also has parish halls where a stone statue of Saint Raphael is located.
