Historic site of Vélez-Málaga

Vélez-Málaga has Roman/late Roman origins, but it was during the Islamic period that it truly became an urban center with a name of Arabic origin: Ballax, Ballix, Aballix, or Ballix-Malica. The Muslim city was structured with the fortress at the highest point of the town, a place of great defensive and strategic value. It extended along the western slope of the hill, in what is now known as "La Villa," preserving the imprint of this culture in its urban layout. To the south, the first neighborhood outside the city walls, called "Arrabal de San Sebastián," extended to the bed of the stream that surrounded the hill. The city was surrounded by a belt of walls that enclosed the fortress and had four main gates: the Granada Gate to the north, the Antequera Gate to the northwest, the Arrabal Gate to the south, and the Puerta Real to the west, the latter being the only one that remains complete today. The Christian City

Following the Christian conquest in 1487, the Muslim population gradually abandoned the city, gradually "Christianizing" it. This was clearly reflected in the morphological configuration of the urban center, with its main mosque becoming the current Church of Santa María. The city grew according to its new functions and developed in a staggered, amphitheater-like manner toward the lower areas. The new "foundations" after the conquest served as a focal point for the population, which, as it overflowed the walled enclosure, settled in the surrounding areas, thus forming new neighborhoods around churches and convents.
Current Description

Currently, the emblematic image of the city is formed by two opposing hills: the Fortress, where the remains of the Keep and the Mudejar Church of Santa María stand out, and the San Cristóbal Hill, crowned by the Hermitage of Los Remedios. From these hills, a small, cubic architecture spreads out in white tones that adapt to the terrain, formed by the neighborhoods of "La Villa" and "Arrabal de San Sebastián."
