Historic center

The heart of the old town is the emblematic Plaza de los Naranjos, a perfect example of Castilian Renaissance urbanism. After the Christian conquest, this square became the nerve center of the city, surrounded by three notable buildings: the Town Hall, erected by the Catholic Monarchs; the Casa del Corregidor, with its façade that blends Gothic-Mudéjar and Renaissance styles; and the Hermitage of Santiago, the oldest temple in Marbella, dating back to the 15th century and notable for its misalignment with the square, a sign of its antiquity.

Just a few steps away, the majestic Church of Santa María de la Encarnación, begun in 1618, attracts with its Baroque style and imposing presence. Nearby, the remains of the castle and the Arab defensive wall stand as tangible evidence of the city’s rich history. Other points of interest include the Casa del Roque, the chapel of San Juan de Dios, the Royal Hospital of Mercy, and the former Bazán Hospital, all of Renaissance style, adding to the historical charm of the old town.

In the picturesque Barrio Alto, the Hermitage of the Holy Christ of Vera Cruz, with its distinctive square tower and glazed ceramic roof, stands as a symbol of the 15th century, expanded in the 18th century. This neighborhood, also known as the San Francisco neighborhood due to a now-disappeared Franciscan convent, is a corner of peace and tradition.

The Barrio Nuevo, although separated from the walled area by the Arroyo de la Represa and lacking monumental buildings, retains its original layout. Here, the simple houses of lime, tile, and wooden beams, with their small gardens and courtyards, keep alive the essence of traditional Marbella.

A walk through the old town of Marbella is not just a tourist visit; it is an immersion in history, an experience that allows one to discover the beauty and serenity of a city that has managed to preserve its heritage and charm over the centuries. Every corner, every square, every building has a story to tell, making this journey an unforgettable adventure for all those seeking to connect with the historical soul of Marbella.
