Hermitage of Candelaria in Colmenar

According to tradition, the chapel was built in gratitude to some Canarian sailors who miraculously survived a storm off the coast of Malaga.

Located at the highest point of Colmenar, the chapel offers unparalleled views of the surrounding area. Its structure, which has undergone various renovations over the centuries, consists of a single rectangular nave, culminating in an imposing semicircular triumphal arch that leads to a raised presbytery. Above the presbytery, an octagonal dome, which once housed a now-lost dome, adds a touch of mystery and beauty to the building.

The chapel, a jewel dating from 1719, is a square room covered by a hemispherical vault on pendentives, adorned with rich Baroque decoration that captivates any visitor. On the exterior, the façade stands out with its semicircular opening flanked by Tuscan pilasters, a mixtilinear cornice, and an elegant bell gable with three openings crowned by a sinuous molding and a pentagonal plaque.
