Martín Alfonso Fernández de Córdoba, Chief Constable of the Frontier, received authorization from King Alfonso XI of Castile in 1340 to repopulate the town of Montemayor. This permission marked the beginning of the construction of the current castle, using materials from the old Dos Hermanas Castle, located six kilometers away. Initially conceived as a defensive fortress, it was eventually transformed into a stately residence that housed prominent noble families.
Ducal Castle of Frías.
During the 18th century, the County of Montemayor was linked to the Duchy of Frías. This connection elevated the castles status, turning it into a center of power and influence. José Fernández de Velasco y Sforza, the last duke to inhabit the fortress, added another chapter to its history by moving one of Spains finest historical archives into its rooms. This cultural legacy was later donated to the National Historical Archive, further enhancing its historical value.
The castle also hosted illustrious visitors, such as King Juan Carlos I, who frequented the residence during his guardianship by the last duke during Francos dictatorship. This connection with the monarchy added a special nuance to the castles history and its relevance in the political and social sphere of the time.
Despite its historical significance and its declaration as a Site of Cultural Interest in 1985, the castle remains closed to the public. The Andalusian Regional Government granted dispensations to its current owner, María Concepción de Silva y Azlor de Aragón, to prevent its opening in 2010 and again in 2017. This decision has generated controversy, and the mayor of the municipality filed a legal complaint in 2019, seeking to guarantee public access to this jewel of historical heritage.
