Doña Mencía Castle

he Doña Mencía Castle, founded in 1415 by Diego Fernández de Córdoba, is the centrepiece of this historic complex. With its trapezoidal layout and imposing walls, it retains much of its original structure. Recent excavations have even revealed traces of Neolithic occupation, dating back to ancient times.
Five Stages of Occupation

Over the centuries, the Castle has witnessed five stages of occupation, from the late Roman period to the beginning of the 20th century. From a watchtower built by the Order of Calatrava in the 13th century to its transformation into a warehouse, granary and mill in the 16th century, the Castle has witnessed the changes that have marked the history of Doña Mencía.
The Patio de Armas and its Secrets

Inside the Castle, the Patio de Armas reveals its charm with a well and an octagonal fountain of Mudejar influence. Here, between stone pillars and back rooms, you can feel the essence of centuries past. In addition, you can admire the remains of the Duke of Sessas mill, an exceptional example of pre-industrial technology for oil production.
The Municipal Granary: Guardian of Supply

Beyond the city walls, the Municipal Granary, rebuilt in 1759, served as a bread and cereal warehouse to ensure supplies in times of scarcity. The arches that separated its original naves still remain, recalling its vital role in the life of the community.
