Church of San Sebastián - Plaza de Abastos Guadalcanal

Alonso de Cárdenas, Grand Master of the Order of Santiago, commissioned the construction of this church in 1481.

A unique feature of this temple, which distinguishes it from others of its style, is the great height of its pilasters, crowned by very simple capitals, giving the building an extraordinary grandeur. In the first quarter of the 16th century, notable constructions were added, transitioning from Gothic to Renaissance, as can be seen in the vault of the presbytery, which suggests the influence of a master architect contemporary to Diego de Riaño.

This church was closed for worship in 1936. Until then, it served as the place of worship for the Brotherhood of Our Father Jesus Nazarene. Currently, the building is being used as a public marketplace.

The transition in architectural styles from Gothic to Renaissance during the early 16th century is a key hallmark of this church, blending the verticality and grandeur of Gothic elements with the symmetry and proportion characteristic of Renaissance architecture. The presence of Diego de Riaño’s contemporary influence speaks to the church
