Church of Our Lady of the Castle

It is an architectural and artistic treasure that stands majestically in the heart of the town. Located at the highest point, its imposing presence stands out on the horizon.

Inside, a cultural wealth is displayed that reflects centuries of history. Among its most outstanding treasures is the main altarpiece, a work from the 16th century that dazzles with its plateresque splendor. Next to it, the altarpiece of the chapel of the Tabernacle, also from the same period, captivates with its beauty. The mural paintings, discovered in the 20th century and dated to the end of the 15th century, add a touch of mystery and charm to the sacred atmosphere. The processional monstrance, attributed to Juan Ruiz el Vandalino, adds an aura of veneration to the place.

The history of this temple is intertwined with that of Fuente Obejuna itself. It is said that a castle was originally built there, although there is no concrete evidence. The union of the churches of Santa María and San Miguel, at the end of the 15th century, marked the birth of the current church of Nuestra Señora del Castillo. The works were completed in 1494, under the bishopric of Íñigo Manrique de Córdoba.

Over the centuries, the church has witnessed historical events, including the Spanish Civil War, which left its mark in the form of losses in the religious heritage. However, it is in times of peace when the beauty of this temple shines in all its splendor.

In the 19th century, important reforms were carried out, including the relocation of the main altar. In the 20th century, restorations and discoveries of mural paintings hidden under layers of lime returned the church to its original splendor. In 1994, the artistic museum of the parish was inaugurated, dedicated to preserving and exhibiting its invaluable cultural legacy.

The architecture of the church reflects the late Gothic splendor, with characteristics that make it unique in the province of Córdoba. Its three naves, its ribbed vaults and its doorways, each with its own history and style, bear witness to the mastery of the craftsmen who built it.

The main chapel, with its majestic altarpiece and its atmosphere of serenity, invites contemplation and devotion. Every detail, from the medallions on the vault to the reliefs of the apostles on the altarpiece, tells a story of faith and art.

The bell tower, rebuilt after the ravages of the War of Independence, crowns the church with its imposing presence. Its bells, commemorating religious rites and announcing the hours, are an inseparable part of the cultural fabric of Fuente Obejuna
