Castle of Carcabuey

It was rebuilt in the 13th century by Ferdinand III and passed into the hands of the Order of Calatrava. At the end of the 13th century, Mayor Nuño Tello defended the fortress during the rebellion of Prince Don Sancho. In 1339, the castle was conquered by the Nasrid king Yusuf I, but Alfonso XI recovered it in 1341. In 1385, Carcabuey became a stately town under Ruy Díaz de Berrio, and in 1465 it was sold to Alonso Fernández de Córdoba.

The chapel of the Virgen del Castillo was built in the late 18th century in honor of the patron saint of Carcabuey. After suffering damage in the 1951 earthquake, it was rebuilt in 1952. In 2020, a castle restoration project was announced, which includes strengthening the walls and installing information panels.

The castle has a triangular layout adapted to the topography of the hill, with five towers and a large parade ground. At the eastern entrance, there is a Roman cistern and remains of structures from different periods.
