Calcolithic Silos Archaeological Site, Alameda

Discoveries Unveiling an Ancient Community

The site was discovered in 1983, during excavations in the area of the Roman Baths of Alameda. What archaeologists found was a set of twenty-eight rock-carved cavities, connected by a series of channels. These cavities, known as silos, were used to store grains and other food, indicating an established society dedicated to agriculture. However, the presence of human remains and stone tools has led experts to debate whether these structures may have had a funerary use in addition to their agricultural purpose.

An Unsolved Mystery

The Chalcolithic Silos Site has yet to reveal all its secrets. While some researchers initially suggested that these cavities may have functioned as a necropolis, later studies challenge this theory, proposing a more versatile use for the silos, both for storage and other yet-to-be-fully-understood purposes. What is clear is that these structures are part of a complex system of life that developed in the region, and there is still much more to discover.

A Testament to Ancient Life in Alameda

Beyond the silos, the territory of Alameda has generously revealed fragments of its ancient past. On the Cerro del Castillejo, ceramic vessels from the same period have been found, along with polished stone tools like axes and mortars discovered at various points in the municipality. These pieces, together with Iberian and Roman coins found in the area, paint a rich and diverse historical canvas, attesting to the importance of Alameda over millennia.

An Opportunity for Explorers of the Past

The Chalcolithic Silos Site continues to be a place of interest not only for archaeologists, but also for any visitor interested in the deep history of Andalusia. With twelve cavities and four canals still to be excavated, this site promises future revelations that could change our understanding of early civilizations in the region.
