The hospital is the result of the merging of two separate buildings constructed on a steeply sloping site. As you enter, you will discover a series of spaces reflecting continuous level changes, structured around courtyards and galleries that invite you to explore every corner.
The main courtyard, rectangular in shape, is flanked by brick arches with alfices on Tuscan columns. This space is the heart of the building, providing access to the hospital chapel, which was originally the Bazán family pantheon. It features a rectangular, irregular nave and a presbytery covered by a hemispherical vault decorated with painted shields and plaster bas-reliefs.
Architectural Treasures
Each floor of the hospital reveals unique architectural details. In the basement, you will find a room with a well and two lowered barrel vaults supported by marble columns. The ground floor houses a rectangular hall with an impressive Mudejar ceiling of "par y nudillo" design, while the first floor features another room with a Mudejar "par y nudillo" truss with tie beams.
The Tower-Mirador
One of the most distinctive elements of the Hospital Bazán is its tower-mirador, located at the southwestern corner of the building. This rectangular tower, built from sandstone ashlar, offers spectacular views from its semicircular arches. Decorated with rosettes and the Bazán coat of arms, the tower-mirador is a testament to the grandeur and attention to detail that characterize this monument.
A Contemporary Art Haven
Since 1989, after meticulous restoration, the Hospital Bazán has housed the Museum of Contemporary Spanish Engraving. This museum serves as a meeting place for art enthusiasts, showcasing works by prominent Spanish artists. The blend of historical architecture with contemporary art provides a unique and enriching experience for visitors.
