Balcony of europe

A Place with a Fascinating History

The Balcony of Europe stands on what was once an old fortress, built during the Muslim period to defend the coast from pirate attacks. After suffering severe damage during an earthquake in the 19th century, the remains of the fortress were removed, leaving behind a spectacular natural balcony overlooking the sea.

The name Balcony of Europe was given in 1885 by King Alfonso XII during a visit to Nerja. According to local tradition, the king was so impressed by the incredible views that he declared the place to be the balcony of Europe, as it seemed to extend into the endless blue of the Mediterranean. Today, a bronze statue of the monarch stands at the viewpoint, reminding visitors of this historic moment.
A Spectacular Viewpoint

The Balcony of Europe is a wide promenade that extends over the cliffs, offering an uninterrupted view of the sea. On clear days, it is possible to see the African coast on the horizon. The place is perfect for taking photographs, enjoying a romantic sunset, or simply admiring the waves crashing against the rocks below.

Surrounded by palm trees and gardens, the viewpoint creates a peaceful and pleasant atmosphere. Musicians, street artists, and painters often perform in the area, adding a lively touch to the experience. At night, the lights of Nerja illuminate the promenade, making it a charming spot for an evening stroll.
Beaches and Coves Near the Balcony of Europe

One of the main attractions of the Balcony of Europe is its proximity to some of the most beautiful beaches in Nerja. Directly below the viewpoint, small hidden coves such as Calahonda Beach and El Salón Beach offer crystal-clear waters and fine sand. These beaches are ideal for relaxing, sunbathing, or swimming in the refreshing Mediterranean.

A short walk away, Burriana Beach is one of the most popular in Nerja, known for its restaurants, beach bars, and a variety of water activities, including kayaking and paddleboarding. The combination of the scenic viewpoint and the nearby beaches makes this area one of the most attractive spots on the Andalusian coast.
