Andalusian Center of Contemporary Art

The Andalusian Center for Contemporary Art (CAAC) is a museum dedicated to contemporary art located in Seville, under the authority of the Ministry of Culture of the Regional Government of Andalusia. Since 1997, it has been housed in the Monastery of Santa María de las Cuevas, also known as La Cartuja, a space restored for the 1992 Universal Exposition.

It was inaugurated on January 1, 1998, although it was already established in 1990, and it is one of the main spaces in Andalusia that houses contemporary art, both continuously and through various temporary exhibitions. The museum has more than 3,200 works of art.

The Andalusian Center for Contemporary Art (CAAC) was created in February 1990 with the intention of providing the Autonomous Community with a suitable institution for the research, conservation, promotion, and dissemination of contemporary art. Later, works began to be acquired with the idea of taking the first steps in the creation of a permanent collection of contemporary art.

In 1997, the Monastery of La Cartuja became the center headquarters, a decisive step in its evolution. This decree led to the modification of its statutes and the transformation of the CAAC into an autonomous body under the Ministry of Culture, which took over the management of the staff and the collections of the former La Cartuja Monumental Complex and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Seville.

Since its inception, one of the main objectives of the Andalusian Center for Contemporary Art has been to develop a program of activities that, with a clear educational intention, aims to promote the study and encouragement of international contemporary artistic creation in its most varied expressions. Temporary exhibitions, seminars, workshops, concerts, gatherings, recitals, film series, conferences... have been the communication tools used to achieve this goal.
