Tower of Ochavo

This iconic building has not only lent its name to the Hacienda de La Torre but also to the nearby spring and stream, making it a vital landmark for the community.

Cultural Heritage and Recent Challenges

Despite being protected under the Spanish Historical Heritage Law and the Andalusian Historical Heritage Law as a Cultural Asset of Interest (B.I.C.), the Torre del Ochavo has faced unfortunate interventions in recent years. Without adequate supervision from the competent authorities, its upper floor has been transformed into an observation deck, while its interior has been adapted into a chapel, altering its historical and architectural essence.

Structure and Characteristics

With a slightly square plan measuring approximately 8.80 x 7.5 meters, the tower rises gracefully, showcasing a two-story structure. The first level is topped with a brick dome supported by pendentives, while the second floor, though partially lost, bears witness to its former grandeur. The entrance is located on the eastern side, flanked by walls 3.10 meters thick, constructed from large stone blocks and ceramics that reinforce the robustness of this historical edifice.

A Legacy from the Muslim Era

The origins of the Torre del Ochavo date back, at least, to the Muslim era. While it is uncertain whether it existed at that time, its design is representative of towers built in the 12th century, later used by Christians. This blend of history and architecture offers a glimpse into the region
