Torre Bermeja

Built with masonry, the Torre Bermeja has an approximate diameter of 3.33 meters and a height of 10 meters. It is topped with a spherical brick vault and features a staircase on the right side for access to the rooftop. Characteristics such as the double impost of the crown and the base revellin are typical of the Christian era.

Over time, the tower has suffered significant damage to its entrance and much of its structure, leading to repairs. In 1567, Pedro de la Chica, the same mason who rebuilt the Torre Quebrada, added a revellin or conical reinforcement to reduce vibrations caused by the wind and increase the towers stability.

It is believed that the Torre Bermeja was built by Muslims in the late 15th century on a rocky promontory at Punta Saltillo. Its strategic location allowed it to monitor the coast of the Alboran Sea and communicate with other towers and nearby populations using fire and smoke signals in case of enemy ships approaching the coasts of the Nasrid kingdom of Granada.

Currently, the tower is situated in a landscaped square near the Sea Life Benalmadena underwater park, due to the construction of the Marina in 1982, which altered its original position facing the sea. Although its interior remains inaccessible, the Torre Bermeja continues to be an important historical and cultural landmark on the coast of Benalmadena
