Major Bridge of Montoro

The Puente Mayor de Montoro is one of the most emblematic architectural jewels of the city. Nestled on the banks of the Guadalquivir River, this bridge, built in the 15th century, stands as a living testament and faithful reflection of the historical and strategic importance that Montoro held over the centuries.

Its style is late Gothic, with Renaissance elements, and it was a masterpiece of civil engineering in its time.

Today, the Puente Mayor de Montoro continues to be a thoroughfare for locals and a site of great cultural value. It has been declared a Cultural Heritage Site, and its proximity to other monuments in Montoro, such as Plaza de España and the Torre del Reloj, makes it a must-see to gain a comprehensive view ofthe historical past of the city.

The Puente Mayor, also known as Puente Viejo, spans the Guadalquivir River with a total of seven semicircular arches, built from reddish sandstone, a characteristic material of the region. This color gives the bridge a distinctive and prominent appearance compared to other bridges, especially at sunset, when the sunlight enhances the contrast. Each of its arches rests on sturdy pillars.

The bridge has not only been a fundamental infrastructure for the commercial and economic development of this city, facilitating the movement of people and goods, but it has also played a crucial role in the defense of the city during times of conflict. Throughout its history, Montoro was a strategic point along the routes connecting Andalusia with the rest of the Iberian Peninsula, and the Puente Mayor was vital for controlling passage across the Guadalquivir River.

The area surrounding the bridge is also highly attractive. From it, one can enjoy a panoramic view of the historic center of the city, with its steep streets and whitewashed house facades clustered around the hill where the Church of San Bartolomé stands. The image of the Puente Mayor reflected in the waters of the Guadalquivir, against the backdrop of the hills and olive groves surrounding the city, is one of the most iconic postcards of the city and a point of attraction for photographers and visitors alike.
