La Niña de Benalmadena

La Niña de Benalmádena, a bronze sculpture, is a distinctive and iconic symbol of the locality of Benalmádena, in Málaga, Spain. It is part of the fountain that adorns Plaza de España, a work that stands as a premonition of the economic resurgence of the locality and its connection to tourism and international culture. The sculptor Jaime Pimentel was commissioned to create this piece at the initiative of the then mayor, Enrique Bolín Pérez-Argemí.

The sculpture, measuring 1.25 meters tall and 85 centimeters wide from the base to the end of the shell it holds, depicts a girl with an innocent smile and hair tied back in a ponytail. With her arms outstretched, she offers water in a shell, symbolizing the welcome, friendship, and fraternity that the Benalmádena community offers to its visitors. For its creation, the sculptor was inspired by the image of Mª Cruz Ruiz González, niece of a local fisherman named Manolo El Petaca.

The sculpture was first modeled in clay and then cast in bronze using the lost wax technique at the Fundición Hermanos Codina in Madrid. It was designed to preside over Plaza de España from a marble fountain specially brought for the occasion. The inauguration of the fountain, along with La Niña, took place on May 30, 1968, in the presence of local and provincial authorities and Swedish Prince Carl Benardotte.

Over the years, La Niña has been the subject of recognition and curiosity. In April 2017, the ordinary plenary session of Benalmádena approved a file of Honors and Distinctions for Jaime Pimentel, and a plaque was placed in his honor in Plaza de España. The model, Mª Cruz Ruiz, visited her own sculpture for the first time in March 2017, having been unaware of its significance for years. The sculptors signature is located on the left foot of the statue.

Additionally, La Niña has been replicated in a smaller size as an award at the Benalmádena Author Film Festival. A replica of the sculpture is located in Brussels, Belgium, as part of the twinning between Brussels and Benalmádena during the tenure of Mayor Juan García Soto. This work of art has left an indelible mark on the history and identity of Benalmádena
