It stands atop the summit of a large rock that dominates the town, giving it an impressive and distinctive character. Commissioned by Abu Abdallah Yusuf in the 14th century, it was part of a series of fortifications along the northwestern border of the Nasrid kingdom. The construction was undertaken by the same architect who designed the Alcazaba of the Alhambra.
Though no plans of the castle survive, it is known to have featured a large Keep, three parade grounds, and two spacious cisterns. The fortress served as the residence of Aben Ismael III for seven years, a prince from the Abencerrajes who later became King of Granada as Yusuf V.
Once one of the most crucial bastions for the defense of the Kingdom of Granada, today only one tower, the cisterns, and some sections of the Islamic walls remain, marked by three towers, contrasting with the modern fortification from the 16th century.
