The celebration begins on the night of Holy Saturday, when the young men of the town go out to the nearby orchards to collect a variety of vegetables, bunches of oranges and lemons, all while carrying the throne of San Juan on their shoulders. With what they collect, they decorate the Plaza de la Vera Cruz, forming the traditional and colorful Huerto del Niño.
On Easter Sunday, at 10:00 in the morning, Holy Mass is celebrated and then a very special procession takes place: San Juan, loaded with oranges and lemons, meets the Virgin Mary, who asks him about the whereabouts of her Son. The scene recreates the exciting moment when San Juan tells her that he has seen the Child in the Orchard, and together they go to meet him in the square.
This event takes place in an atmosphere of solemnity and emotion, and after the performance, the neighbours come to the Huerto del Niño to take part in a peculiar auction. During the morning, the inhabitants of the town donate animals, plants, vegetables and other products, which are then auctioned off, and the proceeds go to charity.
The setting for this celebration is the charming Plaza de la Vera Cruz, with the hermitage of the same name as a backdrop, which adds a magical and traditional touch to this festivity. In addition, Holy Week in Benarrabá also includes other highlights, such as the Via Crucis on Good Friday morning, where the image of the Christ of the Vera Cruz walks through the streets of the town and visits the sick, and the moving procession of the Virgen de la Soledad, which leaves from the church of the Encarnación at 11 pm.
