The La Tribuna building is a remnant of the paper mill complex established by the Genoese Félix Solesio in 1784 on a farm acquired from Baltasar de Zurita. The main purpose was to produce paper for the manufacture of playing cards at the Real Fábrica de Naipes de Macharaviaya. This initiative was personally promoted by the Minister of the Indies, Bernardo de Gálvez, with the aim of improving the economy of Macharaviaya, his hometown.
Characteristics
La Tribuna is a two-story building with an area of 60 square meters, featuring an architectural style more characteristic of northern Spain than the Mediterranean. Restored by the Benalmádena City Council in 2007, it was given a new museum purpose to preserve the history of Arroyo de la Miel.
The area surrounding La Tribuna is being transformed into a landscaped square as part of an urban revitalization project.
Other remnants of the card industry
The building was part of the industrial complex of Félix Solesio, which included housing for workers. In addition to La Tribuna, other remnants of this era are preserved in Arroyo de la Miel, such as the Arco de San Carlos, the aqueduct on Calle Ciudad de Melilla, and the building of La Fabriquilla, where a mill is still preserved. A sculpture of Félix Solesio also stands in the city, commemorating the twinning between Benalmádena and Finale Ligure (Italy). In Macharaviaya, the building of the Real Fábrica de Naipes was demolished, while in Málaga, the Palacio del Marqués de la Sonora, built by Solesio for the storage of goods, is still preserved and is undergoing restoration.
