Nerja Caves

The cave complex is made up of a series of underground galleries and chambers that stretch for over five kilometres, although only a small part is open to the public. The main cave, known as the “Nerja Cave”, is a natural wonder that features impressive stalactites, stalagmites and stone columns that have been sculpted by the passage of millions of years. These geological formations are the result of erosion caused by water and dissolved calcium carbonate dripping from the rocks of the ceiling.

One of the most prominent features of the Nerja Caves is the “Rain Column”, a giant stalactite found in the centre of the cave, which gets its name due to the sound it makes when water drips over it. Another impressive feature is the “Cascada”, a rock formation that resembles a frozen waterfall and is the result of the accumulation of minerals over the centuries.
