Castle of Zambra

Located in the village of Zambra, in the municipality of Rute, Zambra Castle is one of the hidden gems of the province of Córdoba. This medieval fortress, nestled in a privileged natural setting, offers a fascinating testament to the regions Andalusian and Christian past. Although it is currently in ruins, its historical importance and spectacular location make this castle a must-see destination for heritage and nature lovers.
History of Zambra Castle

The origins of Zambra Castle date back to the Muslim period, when it was part of the defensive system of the Kingdom of Granada. Its main function was to monitor and protect the Anzur River valley, a strategic area that connected the Córdoba countryside with the foothills of the Subbética Mountains.

After the Christian conquest in the 15th century, the fortress passed into the hands of the Crown of Castile. Later, with the pacification of the territory and the loss of its defensive function, the castle fell into disuse and began to deteriorate. Despite this, its remains still evoke the grandeur of a time when these lands were the scene of significant clashes between Muslims and Christians.
Architecture and Current State

Although much of the original structure has disappeared, some remains of its walls and towers can still be seen. It is believed that the castle had an irregular layout, adapted to the terrain, with a walled enclosure protecting a small core of internal buildings.

The surviving remains give an idea of the importance this fortress had in its time. From its location, there is a stunning panoramic view of the Anzur River valley and the Subbética Mountains, confirming its function as a strategic surveillance point.
A Natural Environment of Great Beauty

Zambra Castle is located in a privileged natural setting, surrounded by olive groves, hills, and trails that invite exploration. Access, although not fully accessible, allows visitors to enjoy a walk in the heart of nature, breathing in the pure mountain air.

The proximity of the Sierras Subbéticas Natural Park makes this area an ideal spot for hiking, photography, and birdwatching enthusiasts. Furthermore, the presence of the Anzur River adds a special scenic appeal, with small streams and valleys that enrich the experience.
