Canillas de Albaida, a picturesque municipality located in the province of Málaga, is a charming corner of the autonomous community of Andalusia. Canillas de Albaida is situated in a privileged position, bordering the municipality of Alhama de Granada to the north, while to the east and southeast it adjoins Cómpeta. The urban center of Canillas de Albaida is nestled in the slopes of the majestic Tejeda and Almijara mountains, at an altitude of 576 meters above sea level. The entire municipal area is part of the Natural Park of the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara, and Alhama, a paradise for nature and hiking lovers.
Just 54 kilometers from Málaga city, Canillas de Albaida is located in the Axarquía region, an area famous for the Route of Sun and Wine, as well as the renowned "White Villages of the Costa del Sol." This village stands out for its urban core, which retains the charm of yesteryear with narrow, winding, and steep streets, and whitewashed houses that shine under the Andalusian sun.
History: A Past Marked by Resilience
The first references to Canillas de Albaida date back to the 13th century, when it was known as Albaida, which means "white," in reference to the abundance of white flowers in the area. In 1487, following the conquest of Vélez-Málaga by the Catholic Monarchs, Canillas joined the demands of obedience imposed by King Ferdinand the Catholic.
In 1569, its inhabitants, mostly Moriscos, rose up alongside the neighbors from Cómpeta and other villages in the region in a rebellion against the oppression of Philip II. However, they were defeated in the Battle of Peñón de Frigiliana. After this episode, Canillas de Albaida was repopulated by Christians from the province and other parts of Andalusia. Since then, the village has thrived, with its inhabitants primarily engaged in agriculture, notably in the cultivation of grapes, cereals, and olives.
