A Fascinating Journey from Prehistory to the Modern Foundation
The First Inhabitants: A Journey through Prehistory
In the heart of the Puente Genil region, the echoes of prehistory still resonate through the remains that tell us the story of its first inhabitants. From the Middle Paleolithic, the hunter-gatherers of the region left a lasting mark with their carved stone tools, such as scrapers, bifaces and knives. These artifacts, found in ancient sites such as Torrecillas, Yeguas, La Mina and El Rabanal, reveal an existence based on adaptation and ingenuity.
Over time, the Neolithic brought with it the cultivation of plants and the domestication of animals, providing greater stability to the communities and allowing their growth. Although this period is poorly represented in the area, the Sierra del Castillo and the Cueva de los Vientos offer fragments of worked bones and skeletal remains that tell us about this fundamental transformation.
Around 3000 BC, the copper age gave way to metalworking. The inhabitants began to work with copper and, later, bronze, which marked a significant evolution in their societies. Sites such as Fuente del Lobo, Cerro del Ahorcado and Camorra de Puerto Rubio document the transition to the Chalcolithic and Bronze Age, with finds of Bell Beaker pottery, polished stone tools and metal objects such as crucibles and casting moulds.
During the Late Bronze Age, Puente Genil was influenced by the Tartessian and Turdetan cultures, receiving elements from the Eastern Mediterranean. Sites such as Castellares, Las Gaseosas and Villeta de las Mestas reveal decorated pottery, metal fibulae and zoomorphic sculptures in limestone, witnesses of a rich Iberian heritage that can still be seen in the Local Historical Museum.
The Foundation of Puente Genil: A Legacy of Unification and Growth
The origin of Puente Genil was forged from the union of two significant population centres. The town of La Puente de Don Gonzalo, established on the right bank of the Genil River during the 15th century by Don Gonzalo de Estúñiga, bishop of Jaén, and the small settlement of Miragenil, located on the opposite bank and under the jurisdiction of Seville.
Although tradition had attributed the foundation of La Puente de Don Gonzalo to the 13th-14th centuries under the lords of Aguilar, recent research has questioned this theory. In reality, the territory belonged to the Lordship of Castillo Anzur until 1372, when it passed into the hands of the House of Aguilar. It was not until the Liberal Triennium and the regency of Mª Cristina that the administrative union between both towns was consolidated by a Royal Decree on December 10, 1834.
This union gave rise to the current name of Puente Genil, a clear reference to the bridge that connects the two banks of the Genil River, symbolizing the integration and growth of the region.
