Fascinating History of Frigiliana
Prehistory: The First Inhabitants More than five thousand years ago, around 3000 BC, the first inhabitants of Frigiliana found refuge in the areas caves and rock shelters. These prehistoric communities, who lived during the Neolithic period, left their mark on the region, including a menhir from the El Argar culture, a testament to the sedentary lifestyle of those times.
Ancient Times: Phoenician and Roman Traces With the arrival of the Phoenicians in the 7th century BC, Frigiliana witnessed the construction of a Paleo-Punic necropolis on the Cerrillo de las Sombras. Phoenician and Roman coins found in the region suggest a rich history of trade and settlement. The origin of the towns name is debated between the influence of an unknown Roman figure, Frexinius, and the possible connection with the Greek region of Phrygia.
Middle Ages: The Imprint of Islam The year 711 marked the beginning of the Muslim conquest, bringing with it the transformation of agriculture and the construction of a system of irrigation ditches and ponds that still survive today. The Moorish castle, built at the end of the 9th century, became a strategic bastion that held out until 1569, when it was destroyed by Christian armies. This episode culminated in the expulsion of the Moors and the repopulation of Frigiliana by Christians from Granada and Valencia.
Modern Age: Growth and Consolidation During the 16th century, the noble Manrique de Lara family built the majestic Casa de los Condes, known today as El Ingenio, an imposing Renaissance building that currently houses the only sugarcane honey factory in Europe. In 1640, Frigiliana was granted the title of Villa, establishing itself as an independent entity from Vélez-Málaga. The construction of the parish church of San Antonio in 1676 and the Old Fountain are other testaments to this period of splendor.
19th Century: Conflicts and Transformations The 19th century brought turbulent times, with the French occupation and the revolts that followed. The war against the French left a deep mark on Frigiliana, with events such as the executions at the site of La Horca. In 1833, Frigiliana officially became part of the province of Málaga, and during this period the local economy was also consolidated, marked by the production of sugar and brown paper.
20th Century: Progress and Challenges With the arrival of the 20th century, Frigiliana began to experience the first signs of progress. The installation of electricity and street lighting marked a milestone, although these advances contrasted with the economic difficulties that affected the region. Natural disasters, such as earthquakes and the devastating hurricane of 1928, also tested the communitys resilience.
21st Century: A Living Treasure Today, Frigiliana is a living testament to its rich history, with an old town that retains its Mudejar charm and a vibrant community that celebrates its cultural heritage. The town has been recognized for its beauty, receiving national and international awards for its efforts in preserving and beautifying its surroundings.
