A Journey Through the History of Espiel: From Prehistory to the Modern Age
Prehistory: The First Inhabitants of Espiel
In the heart of Espiel, history dates back to prehistoric times. Although it is not known for a great diversity of prehistoric periods, the legacy of the Chalcolithic is evident in its territory. The Cerro del Castillo stands as an important archaeological site that has revealed fragments of pottery and abundant polished axes. This hill not only offers impressive panoramic views of the Guadiato Valley, but is also located in a strategic location, with fertile lands at its base and abundant mountain areas ideal for grazing and hunting.
In addition, the megalithic phenomenon leaves its mark on Espiel, with dolmens distributed in various points of the municipality, such as the southwest area of the Huerta del Caño and the Aguja area, close to the border with Hornachuelos. These ancient megalithic tombs and the remains at Peñón del Lazarillo reveal a rich tradition of funerary construction in the region.
Ancient Age: Espiel on the Route of History
During Antiquity, Espiel gained importance due to its strategic location on the road that connected Corduba (Córdoba) with Emerita (Mérida). This road not only facilitated transport, but also channelled mining production from the mountains to the Guadalquivir, and from there to cities such as Hispalis (Seville) and Gades (Cádiz). Traces of the road can still be seen near the Alhondiguilla.
Espiel also has important Roman remains, such as an altar found near the mining group of La Concepción and a hoard of Roman denarii discovered in Nava de Vaca, spanning from the Republic to the empires of Trajan and Nerva. In the area of the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Estrella and the El Vacar Castle, there are traces of what could have been a Roman mansion.
Middle Ages: The Reconquest and the First Settlements
The medieval history of Espiel begins in the 13th century, when the area was dominated by a fortified enclosure on the Cerro del Castillo. In July 1237, Fernando III granted the castle to Córdoba, along with other nearby fortresses. During the second half of the 13th century, Espiel was closely linked to Villar de Dos Hermanas.
In 1256, a distribution was made in the area that marked the beginning of its parish organization, establishing the archdeaconry of Espiel-Dos Hermanas, which in 1272 received its boundaries from the Cordovan bishop Fernando de Mesa. However, the history of Espiel during the 14th century is a mystery, with signs of depopulation in both Espiel and Villar de Dos Hermanas.
In the early 15th century, the term Espiel began to be referred to as a "county", although there is no evidence of formal seigniorialisation before 1550. In the 1550s, there were some attempts at seigniorialisation related to Belmez and Fuente Obejuna.
