Discover the History of Antequera: A Journey Through Time
Menga Dolmen and Prehistory: The Origin of Everything
Imagine a journey back in time, more than 4,000 years ago, when the first civilizations left their mark on the land of Antequera. Here, history is measured not in years, but in millennia. The imposing dolmens of Menga, Viera, and El Romeral, located near the city, are not just stone monuments, but authentic time capsules that connect us with our ancestors. This megalithic complex, considered the finest in Spain, is a majestic reminder of humanitys deep connection with the land. The Menga Dolmen, in particular, stands as a true landmark of megalithic architecture on the Iberian Peninsula, inviting you to explore its mysteries and feel the energy of those who built it thousands of years ago.
Ancient Times: Roman Influence and Beyond
As we move forward in time, we encounter the legacy of the ancient civilizations that once inhabited Antequera. Although there is a gap in precise data between prehistory and the Roman era, the presence of Iberians, Tartessians, Phoenicians, and Carthaginians cannot be ignored. These ancient peoples left traces in the form of pottery and tombs, especially in places like Cerro León, where a historic battle between Hasdrubal and the Roman legions even took place. With the arrival of the Romans, the city of Anticaria (Antequera) flourished as an important trading center, famous for its olive oil production. Today, the Ephebe of Antequera, an exquisite sculpture from the 1st century AD, and the excavated Roman baths give us a glimpse into the grandeur of that era.
Middle Ages: The Age of Conquests and the Fortress of Medina Antakira
During the Middle Ages, Antequera, then known as Medina Antakira under Arab rule, became a strategic enclave, fortified with an imposing citadel and defensive walls. The Germans destroyed the city, but its importance was revived under Muslim rule. In the mid-13th century, after the fall of Seville and Jaén, Antakira consolidated its position as a key military center, especially in the campaigns against the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada. The conquest of the city in 1410 by Ferdinand I of Aragon, known as the one from Antequera, marked a milestone in the history of the Reconquista, and the city became a focal point for future conquests.
Modern Age: A Commercial and Cultural Renaissance
With the fall of Granada in 1492, Antequera began a period of expansion and prosperity. Its strategic location and fertile soil made it a flourishing commercial center, with unprecedented population growth during the 16th and 17th centuries. This boom was reflected in the construction of majestic palaces, churches, and convents that still adorn the city today. The Royal Collegiate Church of Santa María La Mayor, founded by the Catholic Monarchs, became the city cultural epicenter. Furthermore, in the 18th century, Antequera stood out for its thriving textile industry, which became one of the most important in Andalusia.
Contemporary Age: Transformations and Resilience
The 19th century brought challenges to Antequera, with population loss due to epidemics and competition in the textile industry, which ultimately led to the decline of its thriving wool industry. However, the city remained steadfast, and in 1883 witnessed the approval of the Constitution of Antequera, a milestone in Andalusian history. Despite the difficulties, Antequera continued to evolve, and in the 20th century, although marked by wars and crises, it emerged as a symbol of resistance. With the arrival of democracy, the city played a crucial role in the struggle for Andalusian autonomy, culminating in the Pact of Antequera in 1978.
