Castle of Aguilar

Its history dates back to the 9th century, when it was part of the area of influence of the rebel Omar Ibn Hafsún. This was the site of the parade ground and a line of defence that were the scene of the Battle of Poley in 891, where Ibn Hafsún was defeated by the forces of the sovereign Abd Allah I.

After the final Christian conquest by Fernando III in 1240, the castle became part of the cora of Cabra. In the 14th century, specifically in 1352, Don Alfonso Fernández Coronel rebelled against King Pedro I and was beheaded after being defeated by the monarchs troops. Later, in 1356, the castle was handed over to Martín López de Córdoba, master of the Order of Calatrava, who fortified it with new walls, gates and towers.
