Gibralfaro Castle

The construction of Gibralfaro Castle dates back to the 14th century, during the reign of the Muslim King Yusuf I of Granada, as an expansion of the defenses of the nearby Alcazaba. Its name comes from the Arabic term "Jabal-Faruk", meaning "lighthouse mountain", due to the presence of an ancient signal tower or lighthouse on the hill.

The castle was built for defensive and strategic purposes, with a solid structure made up of walls, towers and a complex network of fortifications. From its walls, there are impressive views of the city of Malaga, the port and the Mediterranean Sea.

One of the most outstanding aspects of Gibralfaro Castle is its access system. The most traditional way to reach the castle is through a steep path that ascends from the Alcazaba to the top of the hill. In addition, the castle has a road and an elevator to facilitate access for visitors.

Today, Gibralfaro Castle is a major tourist destination in Malaga, attracting visitors with its fascinating history, impressive architecture and spectacular panoramic views. Additionally, the castle houses an interpretation center where visitors can learn more about its history and its importance in the city
