Partially destroyed during the Spanish Civil War, it was restored in the second third of the 20th century, with an effort to preserve its original structure. The restoration was completed in the 1960s with a retable by the Motril sculptor Manuel González Ligero, which synthesizes the values of Motrils tradition with the legend and veneration of the Virgen de la Cabeza.
