The Roman Bridge of Córdoba, a majestic witness to time, stands imposingly over the waters of the Guadalquivir River, uniting the Campo de la Verdad neighborhood with the Cathedral Neighborhood. Also known as the Old Bridge, its history is intertwined with that of the city, being the only one to cross the river for twenty centuries, until the construction of the San Rafael Bridge in the 20th century.
January 9, 2008 marked a milestone in its history with the inauguration of the largest renovation it had ever experienced. Since 1931, together with the Puerta del Puente and the Calahorra tower, this monument was declared an asset of cultural interest in the category of Monument, forming part of the historic center of Córdoba, recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1994.
Its origin dates back to Roman times, probably during the time of Augustus, when Córdoba acquired the title of Colonia Patricia. However, its current structure dates back to a Muslim reconstruction in the 8th century, being a crucial point on the Via Augusta that connected Rome with Cádiz.
Over the centuries, the bridge has undergone numerous renovations and reconstructions, adapting to the changing needs of the city. In 2006, it temporarily closed to undergo ambitious conservation and renovation work led by municipal architect Juan Cuenca Montilla. Controversy soon arose due to the radical nature of the remodeling, but the result was impressive.
Today, the Roman Bridge is not only a historical monument, but also a unique natural enclave, housing a nature reserve known as the Sotos de la Albolafia, where endangered birds find refuge.
With its imposing presence, the Roman Bridge of Córdoba continues to be a symbol of the history and beauty of this ancient city, attracting visitors from all over the world and being the setting for films and audiovisual productions that enhance its majesty.
