Real Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor

Commonly known as the Colegiata de Antequera, this church is an emblematic monument that combines elements of different architectural styles and has witnessed important events throughout the centuries.

History
The history of the Real Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor dates back to the 16th century when the construction of the church began under the patronage of the noble family of Manrique de Lara, lords of Antequera. The church was designed by the Renaissance architect Andrés de Vandelvira, known for his work on other churches in the region, and was built on the foundations of an ancient mosque.

The construction of the church extended over several decades and experienced numerous interruptions due to financial problems and internal disputes. Finally, the church was consecrated in 1550, although the decorative and embellishment works continued for many years.

Architecture
The Real Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor is an impressive example of Spanish Renaissance architecture, with Gothic and Baroque elements added later. The church has a Latin cross layout, with a wide and high central nave flanked by side chapels, topped by a broad transept and a semicircular apse.

The main façade of the church presents a mix of architectural styles, with Renaissance, Gothic, and Baroque elements. Notable features include the main portal, decorated with sculptures and reliefs representing biblical and allegorical scenes, and the bell tower, added in the 18th century in Baroque style.

Inside, the church is richly decorated with gilded altarpieces, religious paintings, sculptures, and wooden carvings. Particularly noteworthy is the main altarpiece, a masterpiece of Andalusian Baroque representing the Coronation of the Virgin Mary, as well as the high choir, carved in wood and decorated with ornamental motifs.

Cultural Importance
The Real Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor is an important center of worship and devotion in Antequera and a pilgrimage site for faithful and visitors. The church houses numerous works of religious art of great historical and artistic value, as well as relics and liturgical objects that have been venerated for centuries.

In addition to its religious significance, the Real Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor also holds great cultural and heritage value for the city of Antequera. The church is one of the most emblematic monuments in the city and a symbol of its rich history and religious tradition
