The monument was erected in 1929 to commemorate the fourth centenary of Columbus voyage. It was designed by sculptor Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney and is located at the Muelle de la Reina in the port of Huelva.
The sculpture depicts Christopher Columbus standing on a pedestal, looking out to sea, with his hand extended pointing towards the horizon, in a pose that evokes his role as the discoverer of the New World. The work is made of bronze and is large in size, making it a landmark in the city and a symbol of Huelva historical legacy related to the discovery of America.
The Columbus Monument is an important tourist attraction in Huelva and a significant part of its cultural heritage. In addition to its historical value, it is also appreciated for its artistic quality and its contribution to the identity of the city.
