With 66 hectares of Nature Reserve and 304 hectares of Protection Zone, this lagoon is made up of a central basin that can reach 16 metres in depth, making it the only lake in Andalusia. Its slightly brackish waters come mainly from underground sources, supplemented by rainwater and surface runoff.
Surrounded by a wide strip of vegetation that includes bulrushes, reeds, cattails, tamarisks and rushes, the lagoon is protected from the outside environment. As for its fauna, numerous aquatic birds find refuge in this Cordoba wetland to nest or spend the winter. Among the species present are the white-headed duck, the purple gallinule, the brown, common and tufted ducks, as well as occasionally the greylag goose. In addition, nearby is the Laguna del Rincón.
