Convent of Victory “Los Frailes”

The Convent of La Victoria, popularly known as "Los Frailes," is located in the old town of Puente Genil, Córdoba, near the Parish of La Purificación. Its construction took place during the 17th century, specifically in the second half of that century. The façade, completed in 1707, is crafted from carved stone with vegetal motifs and a niche housing the image of Saint Francis of Paola, topped by a single-body bell tower.

The interior of the church stands out for its carved and gilded wooden altarpieces. The main altarpiece, the work of Lucena-born carver Juan de Cazorla in 1736, is particularly noteworthy. In the central niche is an image of Saint Francis of Paola, created in 1939 by Montilla-born sculptor Manuel Garnelo. Additionally, frescoes such as "The Martyrdom of Saint Jude Thaddeus," attributed to local 18th-century artist José Antonio Ruiz Rey, have been recently discovered.

The convent also houses a columned cloister, completed in 1725, which currently hosts the collections of the Archaeological Museum of Puente Genil. This museum exhibits archaeological materials from local sites such as Los Castellares, Castillo Anzur, and Fuente Álamo, and features archaeology and ethnography sections.

Currently, the historical complex "Los Frailes" has reopened its doors, continuing its role as a witness to the history and culture of Puente Genil
