Convent of the Incarnation

Founded in the 16th century, this convent was the work of the Order of the Discalced Carmelites, a branch of the Carmelites dedicated to contemplative and ascetic life, following the teachings of Saint Teresa of Avila and Saint John of the Cross.

History and Foundation

The Convent of the Incarnation was founded in 1575, during a period of expansion of Carmelism in Andalusia, and its construction was made possible thanks to the sponsorship of the local nobility, who supported the foundation of numerous religious convents in the region. The convent in Osuna, dedicated to the Virgin of the Incarnation, was conceived as a place of retreat and meditation for the Discalced Carmelite nuns, who practiced a life of prayer, work, and religious discipline.

The convent played an important role in the religious life of Osuna during the 17th and 18th centuries, as it became a center of devotion and spiritual formation for the women of the community. In addition, during this time the convent experienced a period of great prosperity, fueled by donations from the nobility and the faithful of the region.

Architecture and Features

The Convent of the Incarnation is a clear example of religious architecture from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, combining sober and functional elements with more elaborate decorations.
