Every year, the Church of Santa María del Soterraño is the epicentre of numerous religious celebrations, especially during Holy Week and the festivities in honour of the Virgen del Soterraño. During these dates, hundreds of faithful and visitors come to pay homage to the patron saint, participating in processions full of fervour and tradition.

Tradition and Devotion

The temple has a three-nave structure with wooden roofs and an imposing bell tower that dominates the urban landscape of Aguilar.
Inside, you can see magnificent baroque altarpieces, religious paintings and an exquisite carving of the Virgen del Soterraño, the towns patron saint, which is the object of great devotion by the inhabitants.

According to tradition, the church was built on an old hermitage dedicated to Santa María, where, according to legend, an image of the Virgin was found in an underground cave.
This discovery gave rise to the name Soterraño, which means underground.
