Iglesia de San Pedro Mártir de Verona

The original church was built in the mid-16th century but suffered total destruction during the Morisco rebellion in 1570. In that turbulent year, about 500 soldiers sent to depopulate Sierra Bermeja began to loot and capture slaves, unleashing the fury of the Moriscos. Pedro Bermúdez, the commander of the soldiers, left some of his men to guard women, children, and the elderly in the church. The Moriscos, in a desperate act of defense, surrounded the church, removed those inside, and set it on fire with the soldiers trapped inside.

The current church was constructed during a significant reconstruction in the last third of the 18th century. However, due to the poor quality of the original materials, new restorations were necessary in 1791, likely on the buttresses. Since then, the church has undergone various restoration works, the most important of which took place in 1998.

The architectural style of the church is a beautiful example of academic and classical Baroque, with evident Mudejar elements in the simple wooden framework of the central nave. This combination of styles and its rich history make the Church of San Pedro Mártir de Verona a must-see point of interest for visitors to Genalguacil.
