The Convent of Santa Clara de la Columna, located in Belalcázar, Córdoba, is one of the main convent complexes in the province. Its foundation dates back to 1476, when Doña Elvira de Zúñiga established a men monastery. After the death of Doña Elvira in 1483, the monastery was transformed into a female monastery, maintaining its essence and structure throughout the centuries.
Conservation and Architecture
Fortunately, the convent has survived to this day without major transformations, preserving its original buildings in the Gothic style of the Catholic Monarchs. The extensive complex is made up of numerous courtyards and rooms, which gives it a complex organization rich in architectural details.
The Church of the Convent
At the heart of the convent is the church, a single-nave structure covered by ribbed vaults. The star-shaped vault of the presbytery is particularly noteworthy, where the stone statues of Christ, Mary Magdalene and Saint Clare can be seen, although mutilated. These works are notable examples of the Spanish-Flemish culture in Córdoba. The doorway of the church is framed by an ogee arch, characteristic of late Gothic, which gives it a majestic and solemn appearance.
The Cloister
Another very important room within the convent is the cloister, which has two floors of open galleries. The first floor has basket-shaped arches, while the second is lintelled on footings, decorated with beautiful parapets of elaborate Gothic work. The galleries of the cloister still preserve their flat coffered ceilings, highlighted by their latticework and painted decoration, which adds a touch of colour and art to the whole.
Other Significant Spaces
In addition to the cloister, the refectory and the staircase of the convent have interesting coffered ceilings that reflect the craftsmanship of the time. These spaces are not only functional but also artistic, with decorations that embellish and enrich the architectural complex.
