Arab Cisterns of Jairán

These cisterns are a series of underground reservoirs built during the medieval period, specifically during the reign of the Muslim emir Jairán in the 9th century.

These cisterns were used to store and distribute water, a crucial resource in an arid region like Andalusia. They were constructed using masonry techniques typical of the time, utilizing bricks and mortar.

The Arab Cisterns of Jairán are a testament to the advanced hydraulic engineering of the Muslims in the Iberian Peninsula. Their design allowed for the collection and storage of rainwater, as well as the capture of groundwater to ensure a water supply for the population throughout the year.

Today, these cisterns are an important historical testament and a point of tourist interest in Jaén. Although they are not always open to the public, guided tours are occasionally organized to allow visitors to explore these ancient reservoirs and learn more about their significance in the city
