Montilla’s history is deeply woven into the architectural landscape that graces its streets and plazas. Many of Montilla’s architectural gems are open to the public, including the Castle of Montilla. Built on a hill overlooking the town, this medieval fortress was once home to the famous Spanish general Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, also known as “El Gran Capitán.” Although the original structure has seen significant changes over the centuries, its ruins still offer impressive views of the town and surrounding vineyards.
Another must-visit is the Basilica of San Juan de Ávila, dedicated to the town’s revered saint, who is a Doctor of the Church and a prominent figure in Spanish religious history. The basilica, with its ornate Baroque façade, is an architectural masterpiece that houses relics of San Juan de Ávila and serves as a pilgrimage site, attracting thousands each year.
Montilla is internationally celebrated as the heart of the Montilla-Moriles wine region, which is famous for producing some of Spain’s finest fortified wines. The Pedro Ximénez grape, a key ingredient in Montilla’s renowned sweet sherries, thrives in the region’s dry, sunny climate and chalky soils. Visiting one of Montilla’s traditional bodegas is a must-do experience, offering insight into the centuries-old winemaking techniques and the distinct flavors that define the region.
